Patriotic celebrations

Following its foundation, Cuenca quickly acquired enormous political and economic importance. This blossoming was locally claimed-- quite proudly and loudly -- to be the result of the courage, dedication and love of freedom inherent in its home-grown citizens. Influenced by this regionalistic fervor, on November 3rd, 1820, General Antonio José de Sucre led the citizens of Cuenca to declare independence from the Spanish monarchy. The foundation fo the city is celebrate in April 13 and the Independence Day is in November 3. Durint this days, the army, schools, and different organizations participate in the "Civil Parade." There are several festivities and expo-ferias around the city where you can enjoy of the hand made crafts made by locals and trade.

 

Religion Celebrations

Christmas is a great time to be in Cuenca. During this time there is a large parade called the "Pase cdel Niño Viajero". If you are in town you are in for a treat. This parade is considered by many to be the best Christmas celebration in Ecuador. The festivities start in the late morning at Corazón de Jesús and finishes up at The Cathedral. . Musicians play music during the entire procession and each of the different neighborhoods decorate their area, while kids run around in various religious costumes. The meaning of this parede is to dress up with traditional outfits and bring presents to Jesus Child. Other paredes will run through a vareity of different Cuenca neighborhoods after Chistmas until Febreruary. The picture on the right shows a girl in the parade.

New Year's Eve can be an interesting time in Cuenca. It is a large celebration full of parades and fiestas. A lot of fun.

During the month of June the town celebrates the religious festival Corpus Christi. This festival takes place over the course of a week. At night many people head to the Plaza Calderon to socialize, listen to music and watch the fireworks. There are many other activities going on during this time. So if you are in town, you are in for a treat.

 

Art Celebration

Prickly Pear

Cuenca is the house for the International artists meet call La Bienal. There the artist from different places of the world display their painting, photography, pictures, movies, and more to compete to get first place in this event at the Museum of Mordern Art.To open The Bienal and during it, the different organization prepare cultural activities like parades, the international theaters, and concerts.  Academic and Cultural Organization nonprofit, which was founded in April 1987. Its objectives are the dissemination, research, exhibition, education and documentation of contemporary art. While his strength is the painting, the institution has adjusted its methodology and guidelines to new forms of expression of contemporary art, to include other types of media like photography, video and installations.

During the whole year museums open their door to the public to show the diferent expressions of art.
