Cuenca was founded by Gil Ramírez Dávalos in 1557 as Santa Ana de los Cuatro Rios de Cuenca  is located in the AndesValley at 2528 meter above the sea level. It is the capital or the Azuay Province.  In 2001, the city was declared World Heritage Trust by the UNESCO.  The City is well known for its of pre-colonial and modern architecture that is attracted local and foreigner tourists After the conquer Las Herrerias became the enter for trader, the history says that people from different places walk through Las Herrerias to rest and chance the horseshoe to their animals. The traders continued their journal to downtown passing by Pumapungo ruins or “The door of the Puma.” Pumapungo was built and named by the Incas before the Spanish conquer.

How to get there

If you land in Quito or Guayaquil, the best way to get Cuenca is flying. It is highly recommended flying because traveling by land is dangerous. If you decide travel by land, it will be on your risk. However, if your choice is travel by land, it is recommended to travel during the day, and with light luggage, you will enjoy the Andes landscape.
You are coming from Guayaquil you can get a fly in the Simon Bolivar Airport
If you are coming from Quito you can get a fly in the Mariscal Sucre Airport.

If you travel by land you can go to Terminal and get a bus. The bus transportations recommended are San Luis, and Transportes Sucre.
To get the ticket you can walk by, or to show up during the day to buy it. There are busses running every hour.

Transportation in the city

I you are a good walker you can know Cuenca downtown by walking. To travel in the city you can get the buses take you to the place that you are planning to go. The transfer fare is $0.50 for one way trip. The buses run from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., the rush hours are early from 6:30 to 9 a.m., from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

FOOD

The guinea pig or cuy is one of the delicates preferred for the citizens of this city. This dish was on the main proteins sources eaten by the Incas before the Spaniers arrived in the Incas Empire. In every important celebration, or party the cuy with papas, aji and mote (corn) is served as symbol of welcome and appreciation to the guests. To eat the cuy do not need utensils. People use their hands and fingers to break a part and eat it. The chicha (corn beet) is the drink served with this special dish.
Papas locas, cuy con papas, mote pillo con carne asada, hornado con llapingachos,  fritada.

 

Grill Cuy

Tradicional places where the locals are used to go to eat are: El café de Mama Aurora, Los Morochos and empanadas of the Kiosko, Las canes azadas de San Joaquin.
